As the rest of the world celebrates father’s day, I want to take a time out to give props to all the fathers out there who are selflessly working hard to provide their families a better life. To all the fathers who work overtime just to send their kids to school. To all the fathers who faithfully love their wife. This is your day. Go ahead and treat yourself to a bottle of cold beer or go some place to relax. A strip club maybe? I’m just playing. LOL!
To all the sons and daughters out there, treat your father out to a movie and perhaps a dinner, because you might not know when your father is going to be around for you. Trust me, they want to hang out with you like the old times, back when you were still a kid and you could barely manage to walk on your own. We’ve all just grown up and that makes it impossible for our fathers to ask us to spend time with them for the fact that they know we got our own things to take care of.
How I wish I could spend this day with my father but I can’t, because the dreaded cancer took him away from us last year. The rest of my family know he fought a good fight and he deserves every praise for providing us a good life and for raising us to be responsible individuals.
I just want you to know that I’m proud of you – from selling newspaper and cigar in the streets of España and Sampaloc when you were just a kid to support your studies, to raising pigs in the backyard just to provide food on our table, to being a sales agent at a publication run by the Laurel’s, to standing up on your own and taking risks to build Likha Print House the respected printing service provider that it is right now in Bulacan and some parts of Manila.
Mr. Jaime Mirabuena Asuncion, my father, my friend, my mentor, my guide, my drinking bud, my partner in crime, my greatest critic, my Mister Miyagi who once told to me, “H’wag mong sabihin sa akin Joel, gawin mo!” Thank you so much. I tip off my hat to you, I wouldn’t be here living the good life without you.
I will carry on the torch for you as long I’m alive. Word is bond. I salute you sir for being a strong and responsible man that you are and I wish to teach my future kids the lessons in life you taught me. May you rest in peace. *Plays “Kanlungan” by Buklod. No bull. Tears falling from my eyes.*
